Korean dog feeder goes automatic
SEOUL (Reuters) - In a country where dogmeat is considered a delicacy, a South Korean firm is hoping its a latest invention will prove a big hit with dog-lovers -- the pet-owning kind.
It's called PetWatch -- an automatic pet feeder and a built-in on-line camera for dog-owners on the go when they are forced to leave their pets home alone.
3B System Inc, which developed the device, hopes it will do more than just feed furry friends. The World Cup coincident launch of PetWatch is seen changing the world's perception about Korea and dogs.
"This new product can be seen as a product which will change the image of 'Koreans = Dog Eating Country" to "Koreans = Dog lovers," said 3B System Inc, developer of the device.
"Korea will be the focus of billions of people around the world at the kickoff of the opening World Cup match on May 31. Sadly, many of those people associate Korea with dog-eating," the firm said in a statement.
Eating dogmeat, which is popular in Korea and among some Chinese communities, has emerged as a knotty issue for South Korea (news - web sites), co-host of this year high-profile soccer event.
But 3B System says the introduction of this kind of product demonstrates that South Korea, where one out of five families owns a pet dog, is indeed a dog-friendly country.
A company spokeswoman told Reuters the firm expects about 50,000 pet owners to buy the product in South Korea when it goes on sale days after the World Cup kicks off. South Korea is the world's most wired nation.
